When we think of baby food, Gerber is the instant response. For years we’ve been conditioned to believe that this is the best and possibly only choice when it comes to providing nutrition for infants. However, just because something’s popular doesn’t make it actually good. Part of this brand’s longevity and supposed value is in its name. But with proper research, you’ll see that it’s not all as it seems. Here are 5 reasons to never give your baby Gerber food.
1. There’s False Advertising
One of Gerber’s selling points is that it’s packed with iron. They claim that because they fortify their products with iron, your baby will be able to get the nutrients needed for healthy growth. However, the iron they use is barely useful and there isn’t much (as it’s not in the top three ingredients). It sounds great to say their product is strengthened with the additional iron but that’s only really applicable if the iron is absorbed into the body.
There’s less than 10% of the manufactured powered iron product that your baby’s body will absorb and actually use. Your baby is likely to get way more beneficial iron from breast milk, which can provide roughly 50% of beneficial iron.
2. Too Many Processed Ingredients
These days, there list of ingredients on our foods have words and chemical names we can’t pronounce. Unfortunately, some of these can also be found in Gerber baby food. Recently, they debuted a ramen-dinner flavor that was loaded with color and artificial flavors. And the ingredients used to create these flavors were heavily processed.
For example, soy lecithin is a staple ingredient. It allows for a longer shelf life and reduces the stickiness of the products it’s mixed into. It’s also a by-product of artificially raised soybeans. This additive really have no nutritional value towards your baby’s health and development.
3. Gerber Contains GMOs
While the debate over GMOs continues, there are already a lot of them being used in the foods we eat and offer to our children. The soybeans used in one of the additives has revealed to be 96% genetically modified. There have also been reports of the corn by-products used to be completely engineered. This new corn is resistant to herbicides and can cause kidney and liver problems as well as damage to male reproductive organs.
Having not one, but two main ingredients come from GMO sources means that you’re baby isn’t really get the vitamins needed to grow strong and healthy.
4. There’s Arsenic in it
Of course the amount of arsenic found in Gerber baby food is low but what’s worse is that it’s also inorganic. Because this ingredient has been altered in a lab, it’s harder for the body to process. Many baby rice cereals like Gerber will have over three times the amount of inorganic (which means man-made) arsenic when compared to other grain-filled foods like oatmeal.
These baby foods are used because rice was commonly thought to be one of the best starter foods as they develop. However, it’s now being realized that rice isn’t the best option. Given that regularly cooked rice is lacking in flavor, it’s been suggested that this can lead to development of picky eaters. Besides flavor, rice also lacks the iron, zinc, fats and proteins your baby needs.
5. Packed With Sugar
Like so many processed foods, for both children and adults, these products are packed with extremely high levels of sugar. One of the key ingredients used is bleached (white) rice flour. Because of the high amount of flour inside the foods, it’s essentially the same as feeding your child an enormous amount of starch.
Starch is a necessary part of a diet but it’s high in calories and low in nutritional value. Because the starch content is so high, the amount of sugars is, too. And one of the worst thing about feeding your baby sugary foods is that you’re conditioning her body and could actually be setting the groundwork for obesity. This brand is very likely to leave long-lasting and negative impressions of food that can contribute to poor food choices later in life.
