Natural Treatments for Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s Disease is just one of many inflammatory bowel diseases. It is characterized by persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal discomfort, the feeling of having not emptied the bowels completely, and constipation, among other symptoms.

Crohn’s Disease Treatments

If you believe you have Crohn’s Disease or have been officially diagnosed, do not despair: this article contains some very effective natural remedies for treating this condition effectively.

1. Green Tea

Because green tea has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it is an excellent natural remedy for those suffering from Crohn’s Disease. You can easily find green tea bags in any grocery store, or you can make your own tea using fresh or dried green tea leaves.

2. Probiotics

Because probiotics help support and regulate the good bacteria in the gut, they are a crucial component of your diet if suffering from Crohn’s. Although you can increase your consumption of yogurt (plain, no sugar added) to increase the amount of good bacteria in the digestive tract, it is probably most effective to take a probiotic supplement.

Whichever supplement you choose should include both L. acidophilus and L. bifidus, as they will most significantly aid digestion and absorption within the intestines.

3. Marshmallow

Although it sounds more like a treat than a remedy, it’s true that marshmallow root is an effective remedy for Crohn’s. Marshmallow is able to soothe the digestive tract and reduce inflammation, which can reduce the many symptoms associated with Crohn’s.

For this treatment, add 5 grams of dried marshmallow root to a cup of hot water. Let this steep for about 10-15 minutes, then strain and drink. This tea can be drunk up to three times every day to address symptoms.

4. Slippery Elm

While it doesn’t sound nearly as appealing as marshmallow, slippery elm is equally as efficient in treating symptoms of Crohn’s disease. Slippery elm can not only reduce inflammation in the digestive tract, but also protect and repair digestive tissues. It also helps normalize bowel movements.

Simply add 1 teaspoon of slippery elm to a cup of hot water; let steep for 5 minutes, and then drink. This solution can be enjoyed 2-3 times per day, but should not be consumed any sooner than one hour after taking prescribed medications.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that is being recognized more often for its many health benefits. It is an effective anti-inflammatory agent and reduces swelling in the digestive tract. A turmeric supplement (400-600 mg) can be consumed daily to aid with Crohn’s, or you can simply incorporate more turmeric into your cooking. If you are on blood thinners, consult your doctor first before utilizing turmeric supplements.

6. Boswellia

Another natural anti-inflammatory, boswellia is often recommended by herbalists to treat Crohn’s Disease. Ask your physician for the appropriate dosage of boswellia supplements.

7. Ginger

Ginger is an excellent natural remedy for many digestion and stomach-related issues. You can opt for ginger supplements or even some natural ginger ale. However, for the most efficient remedy, place ½ teaspoon of fresh, ground ginger to a cup of hot water and allow to steep for ten minutes, then strain and drink. A small amount of honey can be added to improve the taste. This can be enjoyed up to three times per day.

As one can see, there are many effective natural remedies for the treatment of Crohn’s Disease. It is also important to stick to a healthy, well-balanced diet containing a variety of foods (that can be tolerated) from all food groups. Some patients have also found the special Carbohydrate Diet ™ (SCD), promoted by Elaine Gottschall, author of Breaking the Vicious Cycle, effective in treating the disease.

Crohn’s Disease is irritating and uncomfortable no doubt, but fortunately these treatments explored above are just a handful of the many effective natural remedies to treat Crohn’s Disease.
