Bronchitis is an infection of the bronchial tubes, which are located between the nasal passage and the lungs. It is characterized by a cough with mucus, difficulty breathing, congestion, muscle ache, and fever, and it can be acute or chronic.
The signs and symptoms of acute bronchitis or chronic bronchitis may include:
- Mucus production
- Slight fever and chills
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort
Although you will likely need to see a doctor to completely get rid of bronchitis, there are some extremely effective natural remedies that can alleviate symptoms and reduce the longevity of your sickness.
Ginger is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. Often used to treat the common cold, ginger also helps support the immune system, fighting off the virus or bacteria that are causing bronchitis. For relief, combine ½ teaspoon each of ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves in a cup of hot water; stir well, and drink.
This mixture can be drunk every day until the bronchial inflammation is gone. You can also make a ginger tea by steeping one teaspoon of black pepper and ground ginger in a cup of boiling water for about 5 minutes; strain, add some honey, then drink.
With its natural antibiotic and antiviral properties, garlic is often used as a natural treatment for flus, colds, and other bugs. For an easy remedy, peel and chop three garlic cloves and add them to a cup of boiling milk; boil for about 3-5 minutes, then drink before going to bed. For an easier and quicker, but less potent remedy, you can also try to add more garlic to your dishes, or opt for a garlic capsule to be taken every day.
A powerful anti-inflammatory and expectorant, turmeric is especially effective in combating the congestion and cough associated with bronchitis. Add one teaspoon of turmeric to one cup of milk; boil; let cool, then drink. Repeat this up to three times per day.
4. Eucalyptus Oil
Eucalyptus oil helps to reduce inflammation and soothe the swollen bronchial tubes. Use steam therapy and add a couple of drops of eucalyptus extract to the water. You can also apply eucalyptus oil directly to the chest to alleviate congestion and open up the airways.
Honey is another natural remedy that is often used, and very effective, for colds and similar viruses. Honey boosts your immune system and contains antibacterial properties that will help fight the root of bronchitis—the infection. You can simply add one teaspoon of honey to your favorite herbal tea to reap the benefits of honey.
Onion is a powerful expectorant and helps dissolve mucus and phlegm while also preventing further buildup. For the best effect, consume one teaspoon of raw onion juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
7. Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds help relieve chest pain and pressure and have anti-inflammatory properties as well. Simply mix in ½ teaspoon of sesame seed powder into a full glass of water and drink this two times per day. You can also munch on raw sesame seeds.
As always when you’re sick, it is very important to drink plenty of water. Your body will only feel worse and have a more difficult time recovering from bronchitis if it is also battling dehydration. In addition, make sure you are getting plenty of sleep so that your body has the time and energy to fight the bacteria or virus that has caused the infection. With water, rest, and a natural remedy or two from the list above, and you should be good as new in no time.
