9 Fast Acting Natural Remedies for Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is never fun, and our chances of falling victim to it increases every time we eat out. Not cooking or storing food properly is the most common reason for food poisoning, although eating something past its expiration can also cause the symptoms. Food poisoning symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever, and the symptoms usually last 1-2 days.

Natural Remedies for Food Poisoning

The next time you get food poisoning you don’t need to suffer in silence. Instead, try one (or some) of these fast-acting, natural remedies to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of such.

1. Charcoal

Activated charcoal is used as a filtering agent, and it can also be used to filter out toxins and bacteria from the body. In fact, it is a common first-aid tool used to treat poison consumption, which is essentially what your body’s going through when eating bad food. Because it stops absorption and digestion, activated charcoal can also help expedite recovery from food poisoning.

2. Cola nut (Cola acuminate)

Cola nut is an excellent traditional remedy for food poisoning. It is generally mixed with ginger or cayenne to assist with detoxification and alleviate cravings for nicotine and other harmful drugs. Other common names include Kola nut, Bizzy, Sterculia, and Colero. To make Cola nut tea, boil 1/2 cup of water and add 1 tsp. Cola nut powder. Stir for around 2-3 minutes. Remove the pot from heat and strain the liquid. Let it cool, sweeten to taste, and drink immediately!

3. Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is another effective remedy for this condition. Because food poisoning is usually caused by bacteria, colloidal silver will kill it. This solution also works well as a natural and non-toxic preservative.

4. Ginger

Ginger is always an excellent remedy when dealing with an upset stomach, and treating food poisoning is no exception. You can opt for ginger ale, or even just munch on a small amount of fresh ginger. Ginger is also available in the form of a pill and can be found at some health food stores.

5. Lemon

Lemon has potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, all of which make it a powerful remedy for food poisoning. The acidic qualities of lemon also help kill any bacteria causing food poisoning. For a simple fix, combine a small amount of honey to one teaspoon of lemon juice, and drink 2-3 times per day. Sipping on some warm lemon water can also help with the symptoms.

6. Basil

Basil is very soothing for the digestive tract and greatly helps with abdominal discomfort. The herb also contains antimicrobial properties which helps to treat food poisoning. One remedy is to add some basil leaves, sea salt, and black pepper to a serving of plain yogurt and eat up for relief. If you can’t stomach the thought of food, try adding 2-3 drops of basil oil to 4 cups of water and drink slowly throughout the day; this will help alleviate discomfort and kill any bacteria.

7. Garlic

Garlic has potent antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, and is very effective in treating diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. To experience relief quickly, eat one whole fresh garlic glove with a full glass of water. You can also apply a combination of garlic oil and organic soybean oil to your stomach to alleviate the nausea.

8. Banana

Because bananas are rich in potassium, they help to replenish that nutrient as well as others that have been lost due to diarrhea or vomiting. The fruit is also easy on the stomach and helps soothe stomach cramps.

9. Cumin

Cumin seeds have long been used to treat abdominal discomfort for years. Cumin also effectively treats inflammation in the stomach caused by food poisoning. For treatment, boil one tsp. of cumin seeds in a cup of water, then add some coriander juice and salt and drink two times per day. Alternatively, you can make an herbal tea from cumin seeds, asafoetida, and salt and drink 2-3 times per day.

If you suffer from food poisoning again, don’t reach for that Pepto-bismol, which can cause additional harmful and uncomfortable side effects. Instead, utilize one or some of these natural remedies for quick and effective relief.
