Cavities are small holes in the teeth caused by tooth decay. Poor diet, stress, nutritional deficiencies, and bacterial overgrowth contribute to the development of cavities. The common bacteria that play a role in the decay is Streptococcus mutans. These bacteria create a sticky film called plaque. Plague contains an acid which eats away minerals such as calcium and phosphate from your enamel. You’re advised to reverse your tooth decay problem and avoid dangerous amalgam fillings. Things like brushing your teeth twice a day, once after waking up and once before bed, is an ideal way to prevent cavities. Moreover, use a doctor’s recommended mouthwash that suits your specific needs. For example, there are different mouthwash that performs different duties such as fighting gum disease, keeping your mouth fresh or preventing tooth decay. Below are natural remedies for cavities.
Use of Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is used as a natural medicine to treat several types of illnesses. In a study of 300 healthy individuals, those who used 100 percent pure aloe vera juice to rinse their mouth, found it to be as effective as the standard mouthwash. The same results were obtained in another study which took even longer time.
Additionally, aloe vera kills the plague that produces streptococcus mutans bacteria in the mouth as well as yeast Candida albicans, thus promoting healthy teeth and gum. It’s recommended that you brush your teeth using aloe vera gel or rinse your mouth with 100 percent aloe vera juice.
Chew Licorice Root
One study proved that these Chinese licorice plants kill bacteria responsible for cavities. As a result of these findings, one research developed licorice lollipop which helps fight tooth decay. Also, a pilot study found that licorice extract in the lollipop reduces Streptococcus mutans in the mouth hence preventing cavities. However, more studies are required for more conclusive results.
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurveda practice that involves swishing coconut or sesame oil in the mouth for 20 minutes. This method effectively whitens teeth, removes plaque, reduces gingivitis and kills bacteria in the mouth just like any other mouth wash. Additionally, it stops any kind of sensitivity in the teeth. When using coconut oil, you can add drops of tea tree oil and clove oil for extra bacteria killing boost. After 20 minutes, spit out and rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth as usual. Oil pulling should be done in the morning for two consecutive weeks.
Increase Vitamin D Intake
Vitamin D is crucial in our bodies since it helps with the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the food we eat. Furthermore, the vitamin improves tooth resistance to bacteria and suppress the spread of active dental cavities. In one study, diabetic and non-diabetic children were fed a well-balanced diet high in vitamin D such as cod liver oil, milk, eggs, and butter. It was found that the diet was effective in healing tooth decay and halting the progress of cavities.
Avoid Certain Foods
According to a pediatrician, “sugar consumption activates plague which eats away tooth enamel for 20 minutes”. Therefore, you’re advised to limit phytic acid in your diet because it’s a mineral blocker and an enzyme inhibitor which can lead to serious health issues. We obtain phytic acids from foods such as nuts, seeds, grains, and beans. This acid blocks the absorption of minerals like magnesium, zinc, calcium, and iron. Even worse, much of this acid in the body can cause leakage of the minerals from the bones and teeth. It sounds impossible to cut on the beans, seeds, and nuts, but soaking and sprouting them reduces phytic acid by 50 to 100 percent.
Take Quality Supplements
Our diet doesn’t fully supply the required nutrients and minerals because not all get fully absorbed. As a result, you need to increase your supplements intake to help strengthen your bone, teeth and prevent cavities. People with lactose intolerance are more likely to suffer from vitamin D and calcium deficiency since they are commonly obtained from food. Consequently, they require supplements such as probiotics that help fight and cure tooth decay. In case you want an anti-inflammatory supplement, go for omega 3 fatty acids.
Since many dental issues develop without pain or symptoms, having regular dental checkup can help prevent a cavity before it gets worse. If you’re diagnosed early, it becomes much easier to treat the problem. Otherwise, ensure you use fluoride toothpaste because it helps remineralize enamel and prevent cavities. In addition to that, increase your healthy fats intake such as avocado and coconut oil as well as vegetable intake especially the leafy greens.
