Bacterial vaginosis is a common infection of the vagina, and it can be extremely uncomfortable. Some of the symptoms include increased vaginal discharge, odor, and itching, of the vagina, and/or pain while urinating. Experts aren’t exactly sure what causes the infection, but anything that can affect the pH or good vs bad bacteria ratio of your vagina can lead to it.
Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis will go away on its own eventually, but there are many natural remedies to expedite the process and get your nether-regions feeling their best again.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is probably the closest thing to a natural cure-all, and it is equally effective for bacterial vaginosis. Because it is so acidic, this vinegar is able to kill off any excessive bad bacteria. To try this remedy, simply draw yourself up a nice warm bath and add 2 cups of apple cider vinegar to your bath water; sit in the bath for 20 minutes. Make sure you pat dry thoroughly before getting dressed again. You can repeat this every day until the condition improves.
You may be familiar with the commercials advocating the good bacteria found in yogurt, and there is truth to this advertising. This beneficial bacteria found in yogurt helps to not only eliminate bad bacteria, but to also correct the pH of your vagina. While this may be a slightly messy remedy, it truly is effective. Simply dip a cotton pad in some organic, no-added-sugar yogurt and apply to the area; let sit for 30 minutes; rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
You can repeat this treatment up to three times per day. You can also incorporate more yogurt into your diet to help prevent and cure BV.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is especially useful in combatting the unpleasant odor that can come with bacterial vaginosis. Because it contains antifungal and antibacterial properties, it is another effective remedy in treating this condition and speeding up your recovery. The easiest way to obtain the benefits of tea tree oil is to add about three drops of the oil to your warm bath (along with your apple cider vinegar) and soak for 20-30 minutes.
If you add tea tree oil to your bath, however, be sure to only do it every other day. You can also reap the benefits of tea tree oil by simply rinsing your vagina with a combination of 1 cup warm water and a few drops of oil.
Garlic is well-regarded for its potent antibiotic and antifungal properties. It is most recommended to just try adding more garlic to your diet if you are suffering from bacterial vaginosis. If you are willing to try a topical garlic treatment, crush 3-4 cloves and apply the mash to the outside of the vagina; let sit for 20 minutes then rinse well. This can be repeated daily if needed.
Fenugreek is a plant that is extremely efficient in balancing the pH of your vagina and eliminating the symptoms of BV. You can add one teaspoon of fenugreek powder to a cup of yogurt and eat daily until the condition improves. Another easy remedy is to soak 2 tbsp. of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water and let it sit overnight; drink the whole cup in the morning on an empty stomach. Both remedies can be continued every day as needed.
Hydrogen peroxide is one of the safest natural disinfectants as it decomposes into oxygen and water. It helps eliminate the infection that causes bacterial vaginosis by oxidizing the bad bacteria. Combine 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with equal parts of water. Administer by soaking a tampon in the solution and inserting it into the vagina for 20-30 minutes. This can also be done using a douche.
Some other natural remedies that can be incorporated include:
- Applying organic coconut oil to the area.
- Applying an Indian lilac (neem) paste to the area.
- Applying steeped (and cooled) tea bags to the area.
- Applying oregano oil (combined with olive oil) to the area.
- Applying black walnut tincture to the area.
- Eating citrus fruits such as grapefruits, lemons and oranges can help you fight off infections because they full of vitamin C.
While BV is not life-threatening and will usually take care of itself in due time, it is nice to have some natural remedies in your pocket to expedite the process. Try some of the above remedies to stop the pain, vaginal discharge, and discomfort that comes with this condition.
