Fever can be described as a sign of illness and response to stimulate the Immune system to eliminate unwanted invaders. The best way to get rid of fever is by working with it rather than against it. However, many fear fever and whenever it occurs they reach for the medicine bottle. For a common cold, flu, or viral infection, you can suppress them using conventional OTC treatments which provides temporary relief but make it harder for the immune system to perform its duties. Additionally, researchers advise that a mild to moderate fever should be allowed to run its course which helps to shorten the duration of the illness. So, what should you do when a fever strikes? Below are natural remedies for fevers.

Stay Hydrated

Fever makes the body sweat more in an effort to cool down which can result in fluid loss. Particularly babies and young children, they usually lose appetite for food because the body is busy using its energy to fight illness and doesn’t want to expend it to digest food.

In that case, there isn’t any need to feed them food but you need to keep them hydrated. It doesn’t have to be water alone, anything that can provide the body with the required amount of fluid such as steamed vegetables, soup, broths, and decaffeinated tea can be used. Babies should be given specially formulated drinks with electrolytes such as coconut water or Pedialyte.

Apply Apple Cider Vinegar

This is a safe natural source for treating fever. But you are advised against digesting apple cider vinegar when you have a fever. You should soak a washcloth in a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water then place it on your forehead. Also, cover the soles of your feet with the soaked washcloth to quickly drop your overall temperature. To reduce the intensity of the fever, you should add half a cup of apple cider vinegar to a bathing tab.

Get Plenty of Rest

Sleeping is the best natural remedy for the body to recover from any illness. Sleeping allows the body to use the energy it has to fight illnesses. Furthermore, you might not spend the whole day in bed, but try to avoid any physical activity. At night, you should sleep for around eight to nine hours and then take it easy during the day.

Commonly, fevers aren’t something one should worry about. But a higher fever level can pose some health risks. Children Fever tends to be more dangerous in children as compared to adults. In case of the following symptoms then you should call a doctor:

  • Children aged 0 to 3 months: Rectal temperature is 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C) or higher
  • Kids aged 3 to 6 months: Rectal temperature is above 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39°C)
  • Children aged 6 to 24 months: Rectal temperature is above 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 °C) and lasts more than a day. If the child is two years and older, you should call the doctor if the fever repeatedly rises above 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C). For Adults Fever can cause health risks in adults too. In case you have a fever that’s 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39°C) or higher that isn’t responding to medication and lasts longer than three days, then you need to seek treatment.

Also, call the doctor if the fever is accompanied by:

  • Rash
  • Severe headaches
  • Stiff neck
  • Frequent vomiting
  • Chest or abdominal pain Generally, a fever should last a few hours, but anything more than that can be something serious.
