Homemade Lipstick Made with Natural Ingredients

Many women wear lipstick, but few think about what they’re actually putting on their lips. The rumor that lipstick is made of fish scales has been around for years, but that’s not even the worst of it. Almost all lipsticks and lip glosses on the market have been found to have trace amounts of toxic heavy metals and some even contain small amounts of lead.

Homemade Lipstick

Since these products are applied directly to the lips, the harmful chemicals are absorbed directly into the body. To avoid the potential harm that comes from many commercial lip products, and to have a little fun at home, try making your own homemade lipstick with the recipe below.

The Basics

As you can see, this recipe is made from 100% natural ingredients. The result will be a clear lip stick (more of a lip balm) that will be extremely moisturizing. Feel free to tweak the recipe as desired; more beeswax will obviously create a thicker, stickier balm. If you want to add some color, try some of the items below.

Adding Color

  • For red hues: add 1 drop of a 100% natural food coloring or ⅛ teaspoon of beet root powder (hint: add these slowly, as a little bit goes a long way!)
  • For a scent: add one drop of essential oil of choice. Peppermint oil is always a great choice!
  • For brown/neutral hues: add ¼ teaspoon organic cocoa powder or a small pinch of cinnamon or turmeric.

Method of Preparation

Place the cocoa/shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil in a glass jar (no lid); put the jar in a small pot of simmering water. Once the ingredients melt (this shouldn’t take long), carefully remove the jar from the heat and add any desired color or scent ingredients.

Combine all ingredients well—while they are still warm use a dropper to pour into a container. Fill container just below the top. Let cool for at least 30 minutes, and be sure to store the lip balm/lipstick in a cool place.

Clearly, this recipe is easy enough to replicate often. Feel free to make multiple different recipes incorporating different colors and different essential oils. By making your own lip balm or lipstick at home, you will be able to avoid the many potentials toxins and chemicals found in most products at the store while still looking fabulous.
