I’ve discovered an incredible, 2 ingredient homemade hair gel recipe. It’s completely non-toxic, and totally natural. It’s perfect for anyone with thick, coarse or dry hair, particularly those who have gone no-poo. A lot of different hair gels are packed with toxic ingredients that can have adverse effects on your skin, hair and nails.
Check out EGW’s database to see what toxicity rating your current hair gel gets! You may have tried all natural gels that used ingredients like flax seed, coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter, or glycerine; however, this is an incredible hair gel recipe created with water and gelatin — just for you!
The Good about Gelatin Gel
The recipe uses all natural, safe ingredients making it easy for anyone to make. On top of the ease and simplicity, it’s incredibly cheap to create. You simply need to get gelatin powder and water. You’re only using ½ teaspoon with each batch. You can add any essential oils that you like to the mixture. You can enjoy the scent of lavender, orange, rosemary, peppermint or anything else you like. Choose from a selection of high quality essential oils.
You can have a light, medium or strong hold. With thick, coarse and curly hair, the medium hold is the best and can last for several days. However, you can use any hold to keep your hair in place. Once the gel dries, it becomes very soft.
Homemade Gelatin Hair Gel Recipe
Depending on the hold, you need to use a different amount of gelatin. The gel will last 1-2 weeks if stored in the fridge. It’s best to use a squirt bottle, as it is far easier.
- Light hold: ½ tsp. grassfed gelatin
- Medium hold: ¾ tsp grassfed gelatin
- Strong hold: ¾ tsp grassfed gelatin
- Optional fragrance: 10 drops of essential oils
- 1 cup hot water
- 8 oz. glass jar or a squirt bottle
- Option: additional moisture needs? Include vegetable glycerine or aloe vera gel.
- Pour the hot water into the 8 oz. container
- Pour in the gelatin
- Stir to combine
- Refrigerate 3-4 hours
- Drip essential oils in after cooling, stir.
Keep it in the refrigerator and it should last you for up to 2 weeks!
