All-Natural Home Remedies for Sore Throat

When you get a sore throat, it seems like it takes weeks to completely shake it. Not to mention, the store-bought remedies are usually hard to stomach and ineffective. Next time you suffer from a sore throat and need quick relief, opt for an all-natural home remedy instead.

Remedies for Sore Throat

The remedies discussed below are convenient (you’ll have most of these ingredients at home already), cheap, and very effective.

1. Saltwater

Probably the oldest trick in the book for helping with sore throats, a good old-fashioned saltwater- gargle is still one of the most effective remedies. Simply combine one cup of warm water with ½ teaspoon of salt; throw your head back and gargle a little bit at a time until you have gargled (and spat out) the whole cup. The saltwater gargle reduces swelling and inflammation of the throat, reducing your pain and discomfort.

2. Tabasco Gargle

Follow the directions above for a saltwater gargle but add 10-20 drops of tabasco to your cup of water. Tabasco utilizes antiviral and antibacterial properties of the peppers and vinegar that it is made up of. The Tabasco addition cannot only soothe, but actually cure a sore throat quickly. As with the saltwater gargle, gargle the combination, but do not swallow!

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda is an extremely effective antibacterial agent, and is particularly useful against Streptococcus mutans (strep throat). Combine ½ tsp. of baking soda into a glass of warm water and gargle just like above.

4. Honey

This is one of the oldest natural remedies for a sore throat and it is a particularly potent antibacterial agent. Honey helps to coat and soothe the sore throat and can also rid the body of bacteria that is causing it. Add two to three teaspoons of honey to a cup of warm water and drink up. You can also mix the honey into your tea of choice, which will provide double relief for your sore throat.

5. Lemon

Lemons are full of vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and other vitamins and minerals that help support your immune system. It also has a soothing effect on a sore throat when combined with a cup of warm water. For an ultimate remedy, combine the juice of one whole lemon plus two tablespoons of honey into a glass of warm water.

6. Blackcurrant

Blackcurrant is also full of vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals which can help your body fight off any infection causing the sore throat. You can easily make a blackcurrant gargle by diluting some blackcurrant concentrate in a glass of warm water; gargle and spit out as with the other mentioned gargles.

7. Slippery Elm

This remedy has long been used to counter sore throats. When mixed with water, slippery elm becomes a slick gel-like substance, which coats and protects the sore throat, providing instant relief. Add two tablespoons of fine, pure, dried slippery elm powder to a cup of tea or just a full glass of warm water. You can drink this up to three times per day.

8. Licorice Root

Licorice root is a great natural anti-inflammatory agent and has long been used to soothe sore throats. You can incorporate licorice root into one of the gargles already mentioned, or make yourself a nice warm cup of licorice tea.

9. Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root acts similarly to slippery elm in that it coats the throat with its mucilage. There are also polysaccharides that help treat inflamed and irritated mucous membranes. Even more helpful, this herb stimulates the creation of new epithelial cells, increasing cell turnover and eliminating the damaged cells of the throat.

You can easily make a tea out of this root by combining two teaspoons of marshmallow root with one cup of hot water; let sit for ten minutes; strain then drink. You can enjoy this tea 3-5 times every day when suffering from a sore throat.

It should go without saying that water is a key ingredient to speeding up your sore throat recovery. Drinking water will help soothe your throat and keep your mucous membranes moist. Tea is another great go-to and comes in a plethora of varieties; add in honey and tea to your tea of choice and you’ll get benefits three-fold.

When suffering from a sore throat, incorporate as many of these natural remedies as possible into your day to ease the discomfort and expedite your recovery. As always, stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep to help your body.
