Most of us love our beauty supplies and use them regularly. Everything from shampoo to nail polish and your daily moisturizer, there are things we would find hard to live without. It is becoming evidently clear, however, that many of our daily beauty supplies are laced with toxic ingredients. Check out the list below to see which toxic ingredients are found in most beauty supplies, and what you can do about it.
1. Coal tar
Although it sounds ridiculous, coal tar actually exists in many cosmetics, although it is believed to be a carcinogen. It is commonly found in dry skin treatments and anti-lice and anti-dandruff shampoos.
This possible carcinogen is a foaming agent and exists in many face washes and shampoos. It may also be disguised as TEA or MEA on the list of ingredients.
3. Ethoxylated surfactants/1, 4 Dioxane
This chemical is strongly believed to contribute to systemic cancer. It is usually found in hair relaxers, shampoos, and body soaps. Stay away from it and all of its relatives containing “eth.”
Commonly found in nail polish, fake eyelashes and eyelash glue, as well as hair dye. Formaldehyde is known to be a skin irritant and another possible carcinogen.
This is a common ingredient in skin lightening cosmetics, even those that promise to fade dark spots or even skin tone. This ingredient is a known carcinogen and reduces the body’s own production of melanin.
Although it’s been eradicated from our paints, it still remains in some of our cosmetics, particularly lipsticks and hair dyes.
A known allergen which also may affect brain development, mercury is often found in mascaras and even some eye drops.
This is the main ingredient in most sunscreens, as well as makeups that contain any level of SPF. Oxybenzone is not only a known allergen, but also disrupts hormones and may lead to cellular damage.
Commonly found in most shampoos and conditioners, parabens can threaten the health of the reproductive system and may also increase the risk of breast cancer.
Many perfumes, deodorants, and scented lotions contain phthalates, which has been linked to cancer as well as dysfunction of the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
11. Silicone-derived Emollients
This ingredient is often found in hair and skin products. It is believed to be linked to tumor development and also causes skin irritation.
12. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Also listed as SLES, this ingredient is common in shampoos, body washes, and toothpaste. This chemical used to be an industrial degreaser and is now used as a foaming agent in these beauty supplies.
Still used in baby powder, deodorant, and makeup, talc may be linked to ovarian cancer and respiratory problems.
A common ingredient in many nail products and hair dyes, toluene may disrupt the endocrine and immune systems.
Your hand sanitizers and other antibacterial supplies often contain triclosan, which may be linked to cancer as well as endocrine disruption.
This list is pretty scary, and may make you think twice about which beauty products to use. Definitely do thorough research on your favorite brands to see if they have been connected to any of these toxic ingredients. Many health food stores have a selection of chemical—and toxin-free beauty supplies where you can find deodorants, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and cosmetics that are free of most (if not all) of these harmful ingredients.
There are also many resources available that will teach you how to make your own cosmetics, which will naturally be devoid of chemicals and toxins.
