Natural Remedies to Treat Autism

Autism includes a group of developmental disabilities than can cause social and behavioral problems. The spectrum of autism varies widely, and it affects boys more often than girls. Some studies suggest that high levels of omega-3s can increase socialization in individuals suffering from autism.

In addition, omega-3s can help address hyperactive tendencies. Fish oil is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and supplements (with mercury removed) can easily be found in any grocery store. Another easy item to incorporate into the daily routine and high in omega-3s are walnuts.

3. Melatonin

Poor sleep habits can affect those with autism more, which results in poorer behavior. Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in your body. If your body does not produce enough, it will impact your sleep cycle, causing crankiness, irritability, and a lack of concentration.

Many foods such as bananas, pineapples, and oranges, contain melatonin, but in very small amounts. If melatonin is to be incorporated into a diet, it is best to find a supplement. Melatonin herbal supplements are easy to find at your local store, and are even safe for children.

Better, more productive and regular sleep will help those with autism better control their emotions and communicate effectively.

4. Probiotics

Some researchers believe that the cause of autism was dietary in nature, therefore some of the effects can also be treated through the diet. These same researchers believe that poor gut health increases and intensifies the effects of autism.

Probiotics help stimulate growth of healthy bacteria in the gut, which helps individuals’ process nutrients more effectively. Probiotics are naturally found in yogurt. Try to incorporate yogurt into your day at least twice, and this may help reduce some of the signs of autism.

Overall Health for Treatment of Autism

As with so many conditions, an overall healthy body may help reduce many symptoms of autism. This includes avoiding a lot of sugar, incorporating lots of colorful organic fruits and veggies into your diet, and getting your vitamins. However, it is also important to remember that autism is a behavioral disorder, and not a disease that can be cured.

There are many factors that may help someone better cope with autistic behaviors. Some helpful factors include sticking to a routine, enrolling in behavior therapy, and the befriending of others with and without autism. It is important to remember that every individual is unique and affected by autism differently.

These natural remedies will help treat some of the symptoms of autism, but it is important to know the specific needs and sensitivities of the individual with autism.
