Coconut oil has been getting a lot of attention lately, and for good reason. It offers your body many benefits and is a great alternative to other cooking oils. It also makes for a great all-natural make-up remover and complexion-improver. You may be surprised to learn that coconut oil is even good for cleaning your teeth. That’s right, this handy oil can also be used as your toothpaste. Coconut oil offers so many benefits as a toothpaste, you’ll be using it on your teeth tonight after reading this article.
Devoid of Chemicals
Like most over-the-counter products, many traditional toothpastes are full of harmful chemicals. One of those chemicals found in some toothpastes is called triclosan, and it’s been linked to endocrine disruption and antibiotic resistance. This chemical may also cause bone malformations, although tests have only been done on rats.
Fluoride is another chemical found in most commercial toothpastes, and one that our bodies do not need. Don’t expect coconut oil to foam when you brush with it, because it is devoid of all of the unnatural foaming agents added to most toothpastes.
Coconut oil is just as effective in killing cavity-causing bacteria as well as plaque. Studies show that even though coconut oil is just as effective at cleaning the mouth, it does not disrupt the taste buds like most toothpastes do.
Cheap and Easy
Using coconut oil is much cheaper than buying tubes of commercial toothpaste every month. Here’s a recipe for a coconut oil toothpaste that will last you for months:
- Coconut oil
- Baking soda
- Essential oil (flavor and smell, optional)
- Stevia (or other natural sweetener)
- Bentonite clay
Combine the ingredients in equal parts, except for the essential oil and sweetener. You may need to add more bentonite clay or more coconut oil to get the desired consistency. Add the essential oil of your choice and natural sweetener, if decided. Voila! Another bonus—you can also use this “toothpaste” on your dog’s teeth.
Use Coconut Oil as a Mouthwash
Coconut oil can also be used as an effective mouthwash as well as a toothpaste. Combine a small amount of warmed coconut oil with water and swish it around in your mouth, getting between every crevice to really clean your teeth and gums. You will need to do this for at least five minutes (but preferably 10-15) for best results.
Coconut oil is something that everyone should keep on hand. It’s good for many health—and home-related uses, and makes for a safe and cheap toothpaste. You can even use it to clean your dog’s teeth! Coconut oil is much safer than fluoridated toothpaste, which is pretty much all toothpastes that you’ll find in the store today.
Fluoride can of course cause problems when ingested, especially by small children, but research is beginning to show that fluoride is essentially useless when it comes to protecting our teeth. Avoid any potential problems that can come with fluoride and many of the other commercial toothpastes, and make your own with coconut oil instead.
