All-Natural Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic condition that affects the colon (large intestine). While a common disorder, it is nonetheless very uncomfortable. Flaxseed also helps solidify things when you are suffering from diarrhea. It’s easy to find and easy to incorporate into your day: take one tablespoon of ground flaxseed with water one time every day. You can also boil the flaxseed and steep, then drink as a tea.

2. Peppermint

Do not continue this treatment every day or for long periods of time, however, as peppermint may cause a significant drop in appetite.

3. Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds are also great for helping with bloating and intestinal spasms related to IBS. They can also help prevent overproduction of intestinal mucus that may contribute to IBS. Add ½ or 1 teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds to a cup of boiling water; steep for ten minutes; then drink up (2-3 times every day). You can also add ½ teaspoon of fennel seed powder to a cup of warm water and drink twice daily.

4. Ginger

Since ginger can help relax intestinal muscles, reduce inflammation, and reduce gas and bloating, is a common natural remedy for IBS-sufferers. Make a ginger tea out of ½ teaspoon of freshly ground ginger in a cup of hot water; after steeping for 10 minutes, strain out the ginger and drink up.

Add some lemon and honey to make the tea more palatable. You can also grate a small piece of ginger and eat it directly with honey to help with diarrhea, cramps, and abdominal pain. If you have high blood pressure, make sure you consult your physician before trying this remedy.

5. Chamomile

The godsend for many stomach and digestive ailments, chamomile is also effective in treating many symptoms of IBS. Chamomile also has antispasmodic properties, and it also has a high amount of tannins which can especially help with diarrhea. You can easily buy chamomile tea at the store, but for a more natural remedy, make your own at home.

Place 2-3 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers in 1 cup of boiling water; steep for 15 minutes; strain; and drink up. Try to drink this tea 2-3 times per day. You can also add a little bit of lemon juice, if needed.

6. Bananas

Another natural remedy full of fiber, bananas help with diarrhea by absorbing excess liquid in the intestines. The potassium in bananas helps address bloating and gas. Shoot for 1-2 whole bananas every day.

7. Carrots

Carrots, thanks to their ingredient of pectin, can help prevent many IBS symptoms. Drink some carrot juice every morning for best results. You can also steam some carrots and mash them into a puree (add a little salt and/or honey if needed).

These natural remedies will be able to drastically help you with the uncomfortable symptoms of IBS. With the advice of your doctor or herbalist, incorporate a combination of these items into your daily diet to significantly prevent and reduce the side effects of IBS.
