While jaundice is most prevalent in babies (especially newborns), it can affect adults as well. Jaundice is characterized by an increased level of bile pigments, known as bilirubin, which results in a yellowing of the skin. When the liver cannot process the bilirubin effectively, it results in a buildup of old and damaged red blood cells and an increase in bilirubin levels, which leads to a backup in the liver as well as jaundice.
This process may occur as a result of a reaction to an infection or medication. Other symptoms of jaundice include yellowing of the eyes and tongue, fatigue, headache, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
Home Treatments for Jaundice
Fortunately, there are some very effective home remedies that can treat jaundice quickly and efficiently.
Powerful antioxidants which help to purify the blood, radishes are very useful in eliminating excess bilirubin from the body. For an effective remedy, extract the juice from a handful of radish leaves and drink up to two times per day for about ten days. You can also opt to incorporate more fresh radishes into your diet, especially in the morning.
Lemons have effective liver-healing properties, which make them an excellent remedy for treating jaundice. Because they act as a natural diuretic, lemons help to increase urination and thereby remove toxins and harmful products (including bilirubin). Take the juice of ½ a lemon and combine it with a full glass of water, and drink this 3-4 times per day for a couple of weeks.
A natural detoxifier and liver protectant, ginger is effective in fighting jaundice. Combine ½ tsp. of freshly-extracted ginger juice with one tsp. mint and one tsp. lime juice. Drink this mixture up to four times per day, adding one tablespoon of honey to improve the taste.
Turmeric boosts the liver detoxification process and prevents liver damage from toxins. For a quick and effective jaundice remedy, simply combine ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder with 8 ounces of warm water; drink this combination 2-3 times every day for 2-3 weeks.
Another remedy incorporates one teaspoon of turmeric powder, the juice from one lemon, and a dash of cayenne pepper combined with a teaspoon of honey in a glass of warm water. Drink this mixture once per day until the jaundice is gone.
Barley is another natural diuretic and helps to remove waste from the body. Simmer one cup of barley in 2-3 liters of water for two hours; strain and let cool. Add some lemon juice to the barley water, and then drink 3-5 glasses per day. You can also combine one teaspoon of barley powder with a glass of water, and drink until the jaundice goes away. You may add honey if needed.
Another great jaundice remedy that can easily be juiced and then enjoyed, carrots are very effective in treating jaundice and repairing any damage to the liver. Simply drink a glass of carrot juice every day until the jaundice subsides.
The lycopene found in tomatoes helps support liver function and eliminate harmful toxins from the body. The easiest remedy is to simply include more tomatoes into your diet on a daily basis. Alternatively, you can boil 5-7 tomatoes, remove the skin, and then extract the juice to drink. Drink this juice every morning on an empty stomach and continue for a minimum of two weeks.
As with any ailment, it is also important to maintain an otherwise healthy diet when dealing with jaundice. Light exercise, especially outside, can also speed up recovery. While you still want to be careful of damage from the sun, you should also try to catch some rays, as the vitamin D will help your body break down and eliminate the excess red blood cells.
