Arthritis and joint pain can cause your movement to become much more limited than it was in the past. It can incur a lot of pain, stiffness and swelling wherever the joint pain is located. The two primary forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, each with their own way of affecting the body.
The former arises when the cartilage between bones is worn out, while the latter is often caused by an autoimmune disorder that leads to inflammation of the tissues that protect your joints. Rheumatoid arthritis often leads to bone loss.
Natural Remedies for Arthritis Joint Pain
Regardless of what form of arthritis you suffer from, there are natural remedies to ease the pain and symptoms.
1. Epsom Salt Soak
Epsom salts are used in a variety of different soaks, and can provide relief to a few different problems. Epsom salt has magnesium sulfate in it, which provides immense levels of pain relief.
Simply add half a cup of epsom salt to a large bowl of warm water and stir. Immerse your sore joints in the mixture. Many prefer to simply run a bath of warm water, and mix two cups into it to soak for a while.
2. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Olive oil can provide lubrication to your joints, easing arthritic pains. Olive oil contains oleocanthal, which prevents inflammatory enzymes in the same way that painkillers do. According to recent studies, 1.5 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil is equal to 200 mg of ibuprofen.
Choosing your extra virgin olive oil is important. You need to use one that is “cold pressed”, though the ripeness at the time of pressing can alter the levels of oleocanthal. You can take it internally, which is the best way to do so. Simply take 2-3 tablespoons worth of extra virgin olive oil, and rub it onto the sore joints. Many suggest taking the oil by mouth as well.
3. Blackstrap Molasses Drink
Blackstrap molasses is chock full of potassium, calcium and magnesium, all valuable minerals that can provide arthritis, joint pain relief. The drink is essentially what remains after sugar syrup is boiled three times.
It’s known to provide symptom relief, joint pain relief and improve nerve and muscle function. Blackstrap molasses also improves bone strength. Simply heat a cup of water to warm, and stir in a spoonful of blackstrap molasses. Drink it once a day.
4. Peppermint Eucalyptus Oil
Peppermint and eucalyptus provide pain relief, though they do little to alter the course of arthritis. When applied, it brings a soothing and cooling sensation that overrides discomfort and pain.
Simply mix 5-10 drops peppermint oil, 5-10 drops eucalyptus and 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil (or almond) in a small, dark bottle. Blend them well, and rub it onto aching, sore joints. Store it out of sunlight.
5. Golden Raisins and Gin
In one interesting recipe, one combines raisins and gin for anti-inflammatory relief. The flavor of gin is made from juniper berries, a fruit that offers anti-inflammatory ingredients. The recipe requires golden raisins because the color is created with sulfides, which are found in chondroitin and glucosamine.
These two supplements have been used for years to provide an arthritis remedy. Place a cup of golden raisins in a shallow pan, and cover them in gin. Cover, and store somewhere dark until the gin evaporates. Eat nine per day.
