35 Uses for Essential Oils

Essential oils have been in use for centuries for a number of reasons, including their health purposes, medicinal properties and often delightful scents. They can be used to aid in housework, provide aromatherapy, protect your immune system and care for your body. The oils are made using every part of the plants, from the flowers to the peels. They have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

1. Burnt Pans

You won’t have to scrub so hard to remove burnt foods from your pans and pots! Simply add some lemon oil to boiling water, and it comes right off.

2. Freshen the Air

Get a delightful fresh scent by putting a drop of sandalwood, pine or cedar wood oil onto the log half an hour before you start burning it.

3. Bathroom Freshener

Dip a cotton ball in lemon or lime oil. You can hide it behind the toilet, or drop it in a counter to release the scent and freshen up the bathroom.

4. Bridal Shower Gifts

A great gift for a soon-to-be wife is a lovely lotion. Simply add 20 drops of sandalwood to 4 drops of vanilla, cocoa and rose oil and mix well into unscented lotion.

5. Homemade Mosquito Repellent

You can create an all-natural mosquito repellent. Mix a drop of citronella oil, lemongrass oil and eucalyptus oil to a teaspoon of coconut oil. Rub it onto your skin every time you go out.

6. All Purpose Cleanser

A simple cleaner that works well on just about anything requires little to make. Simply put 3 drops of tea tree oil and 3 drops of lemon oil in warm water. Spray it on the counters to disinfect.

7. Wash Fruits & Vegetables

To sanitize fruits and vegetables, simply add 3 drops of lemon oil to a bowl of clean water then wash.

8. Eliminate Mold

Demolish mold by adding tea tree oil to a diffuser. You can destroy mold and pathogens that linger in the air, as well as use it on the tub or anywhere else you may have mold.

9. Remove Cooking Odors

Eliminate the smell of cooking by adding a few drops of citrus essential oil, clove or cinnamon, to a pan of simmering water.

10. Remove Cigarette Smoke

Mix 4 drops of rosemary, eucalyptus and tea tree oils into the spray bottle.

Make room in the homemade medicine cabinet for the most essential of essential oils: peppermint, oregano, lemon, lavender, tree oil, and frankincense.

12. Shower Curtain Scum

Get rid of that nasty curtain scum naturally by combining 4 drops of tea tree oil, 4 drops of eucalyptus oil and warm water in a spray bottle.

Fill a spray bottle with warm water, and add rosemary, clove and orange essential oils.

In a warm detox bath, add sea salt, lavender oil and epsom salts. A good soak can do the body some miracles.

Sprinkle a few drops of lavender oil onto your pillow, and you’ll have less trouble getting to sleep. Lavender oil has been known to treat insomnia.

For a good mood booster, and to care for depression, sprinkle rose essential oils into an inhalation or bath.

17. Dandruff Cure

Take 3 tablespoons of unscented oil and add 5 drops of lavender and rosemary to it. Mix it well before massaging it onto your scalp. Wait it out ten minutes, and shampoo it out.

18. Natural Shampoo

To create a great chemical-free shampoo, combine rosemary oil, aloe vera gel, lavender oil and coconut milk together. You simply use it like normal shampoo. It lasts 2-4 weeks.

19. Acne Facial Wash

Mix raw honey with tea tree oil. Rub onto your face. Rinse with warm water.

20. Natural Toothpaste

Make a nice, minty toothpaste at home by combining baking soda, sea salt, xylitol and coconut oil with peppermint oil.

21. Whiten your Teeth

Rub a mixture of lemon oil, fresh strawberries and coconut oil onto your teeth and rinse after 2 minutes.

22. Reduce Age Spots

Simply apply frankincense oil directly to your skin three times a day. It improves age and sun spots.

23. Thicken Hair Naturally

Mix some rosemary oil into your shampoo. It will thicken and increase the volume.

24. Sugar or Salt Scrubs

You can use rock salt or sugar mixed with a few drops of your favorite essential oil and some almond oil.

25. Dry Feet Cure

Mix 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 3 drops of lavender oil. Massage it onto your feet at night, and wear socks to bed to have smooth feet.

26. Cellulite Treatment

Massage a mixture of 2 teaspoons of coconut oil and 5 drops of grapefruit oils onto the areas with cellulite.

27. Homemade Sunscreen

You can make homemade sunscreen by combining coconut oil with shea butter, lavender essential oils, zinc oxide and helichrysum oil. Store it in a squeeze bottle to easily carry about with you!

28. Head Lice Treatment

Combine 3 drops of eucalyptus, lavender and thyme oil with an unscented oil. Apply it all over your head, cover with a shower head and wait 30 minutes before shampooing the mixture out of your hair.

29. Reduce Anxiety

Add some lavender oil to a diffuser and spray it about the house. Lavender oil is known to soothe stress and anxiety.

30. Reduce Teeth Grinding

Place 1 to 3 drops of lavender oil behind the ears and on the bottom of the feet before bedtime to stop your loved one from grinding their teeth so badly.

31. Treat Burns

Combine aloe vera with lavender oils, and rub it onto the burn to heal it.

32. Minimize Cough/Sinusitis

Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil into steaming hot water and inhale deeply. It fights coughs, opens the airways and clears up the sinuses.

33. Bronchitis/Asthma

A homemade vapor rub can be the perfect remedy to asthma or bronchitis troubles. Simply combine peppermint, eucalyptus and coconut oil and apply it to the neck and chest.

34. Hangover

Simply add 6 drops each of lemon, lavender, cedarwood, grapefruit, rosemary and juniper berry to a warm bath and soak for a while.

35. Morning Sickness

If morning sickness is troubling you, a few drops of orange, ginger or lemon oil on a handkerchief will do the trick. Simply inhale when you feel nauseated.
